Fans of Mill Street Brewery are in shock after Toronto Star reporter Josh Rubin broke the news: Labatt is closing the brewery’s North York facility and shifting production to its massive plant in London, Ontario.

According to the article, the move, which follows Labatt’s acquisition of Mill Street a decade ago, will see 39 workers laid off, and it’s unclear whether many of its brews will survive. While the three remaining brewpubs will continue to operate in Toronto, Ottawa and at Pearson International, the future of Mill Street’s small-batch, locally crafted beers looks uncertain.

Mill Street started back in 2002 with a small brewery in Toronto’s Distillery District. From the beginning, they focused on being eco-friendly, making Ontario’s first-ever organic beer, Original Organic Lager. It was a big step at the time, and beer lovers quickly took notice. Soon after, they introduced Tankhouse Ale, a beer that helped them become well-known in the craft beer world.

By 2006, the small brewery had outgrown its space, prompting a major expansion. They converted their original brewery into a brewpub and, in 2012, opened a second location in Ottawa, continuing their expansion across Ontario. But even as they scaled up, they stayed true to their roots, maintaining a commitment to organic ingredients. In 2018, they made the decision to evolve their core lineup to organic, and by 2021, all of their beers were made with organic grains.

Despite the brand’s loyal following, the move to Labatt’s massive London facility has raised concerns about the brand’s future. In the Toronto Star article, industry expert Stephen Beaumont said he doubts that many of Mill Street’s beers — except for their Organic Lager — will survive. Similarly, beer expert Jordan St. John, also quoted in the Toronto Star, thinks only a few core beers, like Mill Street Organic and Tankhouse, will likely stick around, with most seasonal beers probably disappearing.

For most people, an empty nest signals a time to downsize, take up hobbies, or perhaps travel. Restraint and relaxation are usually some of the operative words. For Ann Kaplan Mulholland? Not so much. For this dynamic Toronto dervish it meant purchasing a 500-year-old English castle and embarking on a massive restoration project—one that would soon become the centrepiece of a new CTV Life Channel docuseries, Queen of the Castle.

Kaplan Mulholland, a successful entrepreneur, television personality, and former star of The Real Housewives of Toronto, is no stranger to reinvention. But her latest adventure—leaving behind a successful career in finance and business, moving to England, and taking on a castle restoration—might be her boldest yet.

Kaplan Mulholland and her husband, Stephen, a former Toronto plastic surgeon, made their dramatic move shortly after their youngest son left for university.

“We literally dropped him off at school and moved the next day,” she recalls. With six children out of the house, a career transition for both spouses, and a desire for something new, the couple set their sights across the pond in Jolly Old England.

Their decision was partly motivated by family heritage—Kaplan Mulholland’s mother is English, and her husband’s parents are Irish. But there was also a deep-seated attraction to the challenge of owning a historic property. It might have had something to do with Kaplan Mulholland’s interest in tiaras. Who knows for sure. But what they didn’t anticipate was just how much work it would take.

“You buy a dream and end up with a job,” Kaplan Mulholland says with a laugh.

Owning a Grade I-listed building—the highest level of heritage protection in the UK—meant every alteration, from paint color to plumbing updates, required government approval. “We went to change a tap in one of the bathrooms, and it was attached to a lead pipe. That meant replacing entire plumbing systems, turning what should have been a small fix into a 60,000-pound expense.”

The restoration, chronicled on Queen of the Castle, proved even more daunting when they discovered major issues with electricity, drainage, and heating. Still, the couple persisted, embracing the unexpected chaos with a sense of humor and an entrepreneurial mindset.

Kaplan Mulholland’s experience in television—having hosted a number of makeover shows in Canada—made the idea of turning their castle renovation into a series a natural fit. However, it wasn’t about a TV show in the beginning. Indeed, the idea came about somewhat serendipitously. At first, she was approached about hosting a business-focused show on women entrepreneurs, but she wasn’t feeling the vibe.

“I’ve spent my career being accepted for my capabilities, not because I’m a woman,” she explains. So she balked at the idea.

Instead, she pitched a different concept—chronicling the adventure of restoring a castle. Soon after, a U.S. production company picked up the idea.

“We hadn’t even closed on the castle yet when we got the call,” she says. That same day, a property survey revealed extensive—and expensive—hidden problems. Kaplan Mulholland made a gutsy move: she renegotiated the purchase price, knocking off a million pounds. The deal was done, and the cameras started rolling.

What began as a personal project has now become a thriving business and a community hub. The castle now operates as a wedding venue, restaurant, and lodging destination, employing 100 people in a town of just 1,400 residents. The couple has even expanded their holdings, purchasing additional land to create a 145-acre estate.

“We’re not just restoring a building; we’re revitalizing a community,” Kaplan Mulholland says. “It’s chaotic, but it’s also heartwarming.”

Reflecting on her journey as a tiara-loving English castle owner, Kaplan Mulholland has no regrets. “Life isn’t over when your career shifts or your kids move out,” she says. Reinvention is always possible.

“We didn’t choose to go on a cruise or relax at home—we packed up and started something completely new,” she adds.

She hopes Queen of the Castle inspires audiences to embrace change and adventure, even if it doesn’t involve a 500-year-old estate.

“Maybe not everyone can buy a castle,” she says, “but everyone can choose to take a bold leap into the unknown.”

Ontarians can catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights on Wednesday night

Western Canada had some stunning views of the Northern Lights last weekend, and now the vibrant green, red, and purple lights shifting and changing shapes are expected to appear over most of the country on Wednesday night following a geomagnetic storm!

The lights, aka, Aurora Borealis, likely won’t be visible from the GTA, but parts of southern Ontario will have a good chance of spotting them. This can be traced to the presence of geomagnetic storms, which will increase your chances of seeing the auroras — these storms are ranked from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme).

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) extended its G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm watch to tonight, meaning there’ll be moderate disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field due to faster solar wind coming from a large, open area on the Sun — so the lights will be even more spectacular and visible further south than usual (and if you’re looking for the perfect area to view the awe-inspiring night skies, try visiting one of these spots in southern Ontario!)

The best time to sky watch will be anytime between 10 pm and 2 am, although there may be (somewhat less impressive) aurora activity in the evening and morning.

Of course, if you miss out on the Northern Lights, there are tons of other stargazing events in Toronto to look out for throughout the year! Parts of Ontario can witness a partial solar eclipse at the end of March (Cornwall seems to be one of the best areas of Ontario to witness this solar phenomenon).

As the weather warms up, look out for the Lyrids meteor during the pre-dawn hours of April 22 — you’ll spot about 10 to 20 meteors per hour. Later this spring, the Eta Aquarids shower is expected to peak overnight on May 5 between the hours of 3 am and 6 am, producing up to 60 meteors per hour under favourable conditions.

Before winter rolls back, Torontonians can look out for a Super Full Moon (Nov 5). As a Supermoon is closer to Earth, it’ll appear much larger and brighter in the sky! Click here for all the must-see cosmic events taking place in Toronto in 2025!

What she’s wearing: Cos pants, Jil Sander flats, Proenza Schouler White Label sweater (from Vert boutique in Summerhill), Sacai dress (from a second-hand shop in Tokyo). I wanted to get more wear out of the Sacai dress and I remembered seeing this outfit from The Row’s 2025 spring collection floating around the fashionsphere, so I recreated the look using different pieces and proportions.

How she got involved in fashion: I’ve enjoyed fashion since I was a kid but didn’t think that it would be something I’d do as a career. In 2010, someone stopped me on the street to take my photo for a street style blog. At the time, I was practicing securities law at a downtown firm. A year later, that person reached out for help because they were starting up an online fashion magazine and needed legal advice. It made absolutely no sense for my career at the time, but for some reason, working for the magazine (as a lawyer, writer and editor) felt like the right place for me. That was 2011, and in 2013 I started dipping my toes into styling, which is what I’m still doing today.

Her personal style: I think personal style is a fluid concept that’s informed by the sum of one’s life experiences and, as such, mine continues to evolves. If I had to parse out consistent themes, there’s a sense of ease in my outfits and they have to be comfortable to wear and functional for my everyday life. I like mixing traditionally feminine and masculine elements, and vintage pieces with newer pieces. Increasingly I’ve noticed my outfits can’t easily be pegged to a trend or a period and I feel like this “timelessness” (for a lack of a better word) is increasingly becoming a characteristic of my style.

Top 2025 fashion prediction: I think people are tired of impersonal, algorithm-based, behaviourally optimized online buying. I think we’re going to see more people shopping in person, reconnecting with local businesses, trying on clothes and questioning their origins.

Best style advice: In my Substack, In Moda Veritas, I write extensively about building a functional and versatile wardrobe that you love. I encourage people to have certain key foundational pieces to be the building blocks of their wardrobe. If you’re often saying, “I have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear,” or, “I keep wearing the ‘same’ outfit over and over again,” this is usually related to not having those foundational pieces. Also: buy what you love but for the life you have!

Her take on Toronto fashion: There’s so much creative talent in this city. What’s challenging is that we’re a big city, but we don’t have the market size for retailers to take risks with a consistent stream of innovative, fashion-forward brands. I admire boutiques, like Absolutely Fabrics who are trying!

World’s largest free-standing venue to be built in Toronto for Cirque du Soleil show

Cirque du Soleil is creating a massive new event space in Toronto this spring for its upcoming show, OVO. The pop-up venue, called the Pavilion, is being dubbed the world’s largest free-standing venue! It’ll open this spring/summer from May 1 to June 28 at the site of the former Mr. Christie bakery in south Etobicoke, at 2150 Lake Shore Blvd W.

The Pavilion will measure 60 metres wide by 75 metres long and stand 25 metres tall — the size of 40 shipping containers. The steel frame structure will be made from 4480 pieces of hardware, including 756 wall panels, and be secured by as many as 128 anchors (each 12 feet long) dug into the ground.

Working 24/7 around the clock, it’ll take about 28 days to assemble the Pavilion and three weeks to dismantle it. Once complete, it can accommodate up to 5000 seats in various formations.

“The Pavilion is a cutting-edge approach to how we can bring live entertainment to more audiences in more places around the world,” Duncan Fisher, Chief Officer of Show Operations for the Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, said in a statement, adding that the Group is thrilled to bring this new venue experience to Toronto, as the city has always embraced Cirque’s artistic vision.

This isn’t the first pop-up venue launched by the group. The original concept of a ‘mobile arena’ by Cirque du Soleil made its debut in Sanya, China in 2018 for the premiere of Toruk. Since then, the mobile arena concept has travelled to Sao Paulo, Brazil (Crystal, 2024), Riyadh and Saudi Arabia (Toruk, 2018).

The Pavilion will be unique to previous Cirque mobile arenas as it will boast an all-new building facade that emulates the iconic large tent used by Cirque for their touring shows with its signature stripes and Chapiteau silhouette. Unlike a permanent structure, the stage and seating configuration of The Pavilion will be interchangeable for different shows (from smaller intimate settings to 360 viewing).

Toronto now has a vintage department store that feels like it’s from another century

A trio of very fashionable entrepreneurs are making their mark on Toronto’s fashion scene by curating the city’s first vintage department store, dividing up their Queen West shop into a menswear department curated under one brand and a womenswear department curated under another.

Toronto is home to massive department stores such as Holt Renfrew, Hudson’s Bay and Saks Fifth Avenue, divided into sections and featuring different brands —but until now, no one has tried to do the same for vintage. The lower level of the store is Cameron Alastaire Vintage (CAV), a men’s vintage designer store focused on men’s suiting, plus accessories. It was originally launched by Cameron Wilson in August of 2023, in the lower level of his friend Angela Phung’s now defunct boutique, Aka The Store. Phung now co-owns CAV with Wilson and fellow entrepreneur Karen Estrada, who also serves as the face of the new women’s brand upstairs, CA.KE Vintage.

To understand how the collaboration came to be, you have to go back in time about a decade. Wilson had been Phung’s neighbour, operating an earlier boutique business down the street from Aka. Both have a long history of entrepreneurial endeavours — Phung opened TSOQ (The Store on Queen) in 2011 and operated it for eight years, while Wilson launched his boutique shop, Untitled&Co, on Bathurst in 2012, where he curated both vintage and a line of reworked pieces he designed himself.

That business has since evolved into an original streetwear line under the same name, headed by Wilson and based in L.A. where he mostly resides, with a Toronto showroom in Liberty Village. Meanwhile Phung shuttered TSOQ pre-pandemic and opened Aka in 2021, followed by dessert boutique Happy Sundae in 2022.

Estrada, on the other hand, began working in Toronto as a law clerk with a penchant for fashion on the side. She and Phung first bonded over a mutual respect for each other’s style, and Estrada began pulling clothes from Aka as she transitioned to a career in fashion styling. She grew a roster of styling clients, including several R&B artists in Toronto and the U.S.

“I remember the moment I met Karen [Estrada],” says Phung. “She had half her head shaved, a bright red lip, crop top, and these baggy jeans, she was just super badass. And I thought, ‘I need to get to know this girl.'” They’ve been close friends ever since.

When someone trademarked the letters Aka and served Phung a copyright infringement notice for her business this past fall, it was Estrada who encouraged her to not do away with fashion retail altogether.

“We really wanted to carry out the legacy of Aka the store and TSOQ in this space,” says Estrada. “Both of those stores were so beloved by the community and by a lot of very loyal regular customers.” So they decided that they would open a women’s vintage store in its place, and name it in honour of their collaboration. The acronym CA.KE is a combination of Wilson and Estrada’s initials.

Here’s what you can actually expect from the two spaces: Cameron Alastaire Vintage is designed like an old-fashioned gentleman’s study, with checkered floors, low lighting and bookshelves lining the walls. It feels like a space in which one would drink whisky while smoking a cigar, in an expensive suit, of course.

CA.KE has a similar energy of sophistication, with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and glass cabinets displaying designer bags and accessories. While the shop is generally divided by department, you can also find menswear upstairs — courtesy of CAV.

“We currently have a lot of very fun dresses, a lot of sexy dresses, and a lot of sequined ones,” says Estrada. The selection also features lingerie, corsets and tailored blazers, as well as more casual pieces like jeans, sweaters and tees.

Mall brands such as Zara and H&M are priced under $50 on the low end, while designer pieces reach upwards of $1,500 for labels that include Gucci, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent.

“We want to demonstrate to our clients that something doesn’t have to be expensive to look expensive, because it’s all about styling,” Phung says.

“We consider it an approachable way to shop vintage,” adds Estrada. “You can balance the designer items with less expensive pieces and no one will know what’s what.”

The trio says both levels collectively reflect mix of all three of their personalities. “It’s been a very serendipitous journey,” says Phung.

You can shop both CAV and CA.KE at 662 Queen St. W., from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 12-5 p.m. on Sunday.
